Interested in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Therapeutic Solutions is proud to be the only local facility to offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, a groundbreaking alternative for treatment of depression. TMS therapy is for people with chronic depression and other depressive disorders. TMS uses an electromagnetic field, similar to that produced by an MRI machine, to magnetically stimulate the prefrontal cortex in the brain that regulates mood. Always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, our center uses NeuroStar, which is the first and only FDA-approved device of its kind for the treatment of depression.

TMS therapy is an alternative to medication for patients who have not achieved improvement from antidepressants or who cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressants. Many patients have described the effects of TMS therapy as “cloud lifting,” and many have no longer needed medication, although TMS can also be used along with medication.

How does TMS therapy work?
The magnetic field is administered in very short pulses to the part of the brain associated with depression. This produces an electric current in the brain that stimulates the brain cells and causes changes that can improve symptoms of depression. Considered safe and non-invasive, it does not require sedation.

During treatment, the patient remains awake and alert and can go back to his or her normal routine right after the treatment is complete. TMS treatments last approximately 37 minutes and are usually given daily for at least 6 weeks. The most common side effect is mild to moderate scalp pain or discomfort during treatment.

NeuroStar TMS therapy is not right for everyone. People with pacemakers or other implanted devices should not have the therapy and not everyone with depression who receives treatment will benefit from it. After undergoing our careful assessment, we will determine if TMS therapy can help with your depression.

We encourage you to call us to learn more about treating depression through TMS.
